General Guidelines
  • All of us, Stony Brook staff, students and faculty, are working together to keep each other safe while we pursue our goals. For University life to function in Spring 2021, we must all adhere to the the rules and guidelines set out in University policies; look to Coming Back Safe and Strong for more info.
  • In short: only come to class if you are feeling well! Info regarding make-up labs is on your course website.
How to get to class
  • The Physics Building is on the West end of the main academic mall. Here is a supply of Maps. Coming from the LIRR train station you will see this view. From the academic mall, find the sculpture of an Umbilic Torus and you will have this view.
  • All introductory physics lab classes are on the A Level of Physics (ground is PL for Plaza and there is an M for maintenance level before A). Elevators are in the NE corner of the building but will be maximum dual (2) occupancy for social distancing. Please allow students who need the elevator to have preferred access.
  • Stairs are in all 4 corners of the Physics Building 1. The 2 North sets of stairs (elevators & gym side) are suggested for "Up"; South stairs (closest to Academic Mall, ESS) are suggested for "Down". In case of emergency, all walkers on any stairs will go down and exit the building.
  • All introductory lab classes meet in rooms off the two, central, North-South corridors. A-116 to A-121 are off the corridor nearest the elevators (and recommended stairways); A-126 to A-130 are off the corridor which is farther from the elevators. You'll find it!!
  • Bathrooms are on the walkway to the Math Tower. Hand Sanitizer stations are wall-mounted in several places on A level. Hand-washing or hand sanitizing is required before entering the classroom.
Working in Lab
  • Please go to the lab room which is assigned to your lab section. Each TA will work with two sections, moving between the rooms. There will be an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UGTA) to help out.
  • You will work with a partner, each seated at your own lab bench (the rooms are ~1/2 occupancy). There are acrylic dividers on the bench, and between partners. The experiments have been modified to maintain distancing and reduce contact
  • All people in lab must wear facial masks at all times. No food or drink may be consumed in lab.
  • Need a break? Take one!!! Whenever you need to get a moment to catch your breath or get refreshment, step out of lab into the corridor. You may remove your mask (briefly!) to take a drink or bite a sandwich. When you are ready to return to lab, mask up and come back!
  • Please hand-wash or sanitize upon leaving class.
